ZAGREB UNIVERSITY SPORTS FEDERATION
Zagreb University Sports Federation is the largest local federation of university and high-education sports and at the same time the most active local Croatian federation in terms of the quantity and quality of activities it carries out. The Federation consists of 31 student sports associations that achieve the goals of the Federation with their activities and organize sports competitions for all male and female students in the city of Zagreb. The Federation is a member of the Croatian Academic Sports Association and as its active section, it operates in international sports associations such as EUSA and FISU. Zagreb University Sports Federation organizes sports competitions for students studying in Zagreb. The beginnings of university sports in the Zagreb go back 100 years, and today it is a modern system of organizing sports competitions in which students show their greatest interest. The Federation in cooperation with the Student Union of the University of Zagreb, the Sports Office of the University of Zagreb and the Student Center in Zagreb conduct the Zagreb University Sports Competitions.
The Federation was founded in order to promote, develop and improve university sports in Zagreb. The Federation operates in accordance with its goals in the field of sports and related activities. The Federation strives to enable students to participate in sports competitions, in order to represent their faculty in the competition for the best sports teams in Zagreb. In addition, the best selection of players from the teams represent the University of Zagreb at the national competitions organized by the Croatian Academic Sports Association. The University of Zagreb always achieves the best sports results in the country, and all the preparation is actually the basic foundation to enable student-athletes to perform at European competitions representing the University of Zagreb.
The best athletes and teams represent Zagreb at the national competitions, and the winners of the national competitions represent Croatia at the European Championship. Zagreb is traditionally the most successful participant at the University Sports Championship of the Republic of Croatia. The greatest success was achieved in 2016, when the University of Zagreb was declared the best sports university in Europe. The award was presented by the president of the European University Sports Organization, Mr. Adam Roczek, and received by the Rector of the University of Zagreb, prof. Ph.D. Damir Boras. In addition, along with the University of Zagreb, VERN won European gold medals in 2015 in Poznan, Poland. Also, the Federation received an annual award for top results and sports activity in 2021 from the Sports Association of Zagreb.
Innovations in the development of sports are only the beginning of progress and the basis for the growth and development of university sports. The short-term goal for progress is to increase the quality of the competitions, through additional financial investments. The long-term goal is the branding of university sports and the strategic positioning of the University of Zagreb as a carrier of sports among young people. The same is planned to be launched through the development of clubs with the name of the university where the players come from. This is the idea and the way to develop university sports in Zagreb, in order to build a healthy academic society wrapped in togetherness and interdisciplinary cooperation.
The mission of the Federation is to create the most modern competition systems for all students in Zagreb and to provide an opportunity to connect students of the University of Zagreb through sports activities. Student sports in Zagreb enable the development of creativity and the implementation of creative ideas. Cooperation with the aim of popularizing sports and exchanging ideas of advancement and innovation from the point of view of professors and students is being achieved. This encourages collegiality and improves the ways in which one profession will complement the other. Through competitions and various sports-educational panels, we strive to achieve further and deeper cognitive breakthrough into the segment of the globalization of sports and its importance, basing its platform on the current achievements of sports results and future plans and development of student sports in Zagreb.
AREAS OF ACTIVITY OF ZAGREB UNIVERSITY SPORTS FEDERATION
- To enable all students in the Republic of Croatia to participate in health-oriented physical exercise programs at high-education institutions free of charge (through the implementation of physical exercise programs)
- To raise awareness of the importance and strengthen a positive attitude about physical exercise (through educational programs)
- To act preventively on the development of diseases, preserve and improve the health of individuals and the community in the long term (through health examinations and educational programs)
- To collect information systematically about physical exercise through a digital platform; to make information organized, easily accessible and useful (to users, experts, scientists)
Unisport Zagreb
UniSport Zagreb is an integral part of the UniSport HR system and conducts competitions in Zagreb. UniSport represents one of the largest sports systems in the Republic of Croatia, which has more than 100 events per year, and it is available to all students of Croatian universities and high-education institutions. The holder of the UniSport system is the Croatian Academic Sports Federation (HASS), which brings together 19 high-education institutions in the Republic of Croatia and conducts official Croatian competitions in 21 sports disciplines. UniSport makes studying more fun and it is characterized by students, sport, recreation, fun, future, friendship, youth and health.
UniSport is a modern organized system of sports in Croatia led by experts from all areas of the Croatian academic community with a common goal - to turn UniSport into a new strength of Croatian sports. It includes quality competition, but also recreation, education, fun and socializing. It strives to develop and popularize student sports and build a framework with optimal conditions for a healthy life. UniSport's greatest value is that it brings together sports enthusiasts and also provides a framework for cross-sectoral cooperation between individuals and organizations operating in the fields of education, volunteering, culture, youth and economy.
UniSport is available to everyone, regardless of the level of quality of sports performance and it represents the best alternative to professionalism in sports - reducing costs, maintaining the quality of sports achievements, enabling and promoting participation in the national education system. It promotes a return to the original values of sport and the Olympic Charter and does not exclude the achievement of top sports results. UniSport is trying to be the bearer of the quality of national (amateur and semi-professional) sports and enable participation in organized forms of competition for the entire academic community.
